Light Eaters 4: Wheatberry
September 11, 2011
My visit to Wheatberry was brought about by a search for a place to have dessert in the Tomas Morato area.
I wasn’t able to take any photos of the place itself, but the ambiance was very warm.. perhaps too warm for the eyes if you’re going to stay for a long time. Just imagine wood details and all-tungsten lighting.
Not feeling too adventurous, I ordered a slice of their chocolate-caramel cake along with a cup of espresso. One would easily notice that their prices are considerably more affordable than the more popular coffee shop chain in the metro.
The cake itself was quite interesting; moist, with thin layers of caramel. Honestly, it took me a while to realize that the caramel layers were not pure caramel, but were layers of sesame seed & caramel combined. Genius. It kept the cake from being too sweet, and the sesame seeds introduced contrast in terms of texture. As a whole, the cake was really good.
But what really hit the home run was pairing the cake with espresso. Alone, the chocolate-caramel cake was just “another good slice of cake”, but if each bite were followed by a sip of their espresso - BAM.
There was a small gripe, however. Service was a bit on the slow side, with 2 glasses of water taking nearly half an hour & at least 2 follow-ups to get to our table. Still, I recommend this place. It seems like a good place to study if the ‘other’ cafes are nearly always jam-packed.
